In 22 years of coaching football, 12 years of playing and more than 350+ games participated, I have never seen something like this in person. It was worse than a Hollywood movie. You had two teams that fought hard and fought fair for an entire game minus 2 minutes. It is a shame that either team had to lose because both teams fought their hearts out, but we were fortunate to come away with a hard fought victory. It is a shame we can't look back on this game and enjoy the accomplishment.

However, Heilbronner #51 was out of control. After a blocked kick and clean block on #51 by my player, #51 retaliated against one of my players by ripping his helmet off and punching him in the face. When my player hit the turf, Heilbronner 51 raised the helmet over his head and hit my player in the face with a helmet. With the force of the hit, I am truly surprised that our player is not in the hospital or even dead. That is 100% a fact. There is no disputing what happened on that field. What happened after this point is extremely unfortunate, but, in the end, it is what it is. There was NO Twister player that targeted a referee on purpose. There was a referee hit with an elbow of a Heilbronn player that was throwing a punch at one of my players. There was a referee that was accidentally punched in the ribs as one of my players targeted #51. That player was ejected. There was no Twister Coach that went on to the field and threw punches. Our Coach was ejected for being very direct with one of the referees about allowing to happen what happened.

So, before anyone begins tossing stones at Holzgerlingen, or Heilbronn for that matter, it was a single idiot with a malicious intent to purposefully injure one of my players in the heat of the moment that caused this whole ordeal. He does NOT represent Heilbronn Salt Miners as a whole. I spoke with the Heilbronn coaches after the game and understand that they were JUST as embarrassed that it happened as anyone else, and told me that they will kick the player out of the football club immediately. On the flip side, I have spoken to my players about the selfishness of their actions, hurting the team by getting involved in the mess. BUT, to be honest 20 years younger, in the heat of the game looking at a crazy man standing over my brother with a helmet in his hand after just bashing his brains in, I would have probably chosen the same action. Stuff happens in the heat of the game that you can't take back. What's done is done...none of us can undo it.

So, for the shithouse lawyers who were not in attendance who are speculating about what happened or might of happened, and trashing my players and coaches - think long and hard about trashing our program. I am very proud of this team and the values we represent. I'm very proud of my players and their love for the game, and as long as I am here, we will continue to love the sport and be good ambassadors for the game. To the Salt Miners, no heavy feelings from Holzgerlingen. You run a class program, and the one bad apple won't spoil my thoughts of your team. For the referees, you did an excellent job de-escalating the situation in something that could have gotten a lot worse. Let the Verband deal with the suspensions that resulted, and we will deal with it.
